How To Spot Clean a Pillow

Posted by Jel Apolonio on

Ever wondered how many times you should clean your throw pillows? Experts say that in order to a keep your pillows odor and bacteria free, you may want to give them a good clean every three to six months.

Decorative pillows are both functional and add a splash of personality to your bed, sofa, or chair. What happens when your throw pillow gets hit with a stain? Thankfully, you can avoid unwanted damage by following these pro cleaning tips from us at Millow.

Shell Cover:

  • If the pillow smells musty, we suggest spraying a light mist of vinegar over the pillow cover (without insert as bacteria could get into the insert when wet). Always test clean a small area first.

  • Wipe the pillow down with a mild dish soap solution and white cloth or a sponge.

  • If spots remain, wipe them with rubbing alcohol on the top of a cotton swab.

  • Air out the pillowcase for a day or longer, if possible, in non-humid conditions to help remove lingering odors.

Feather Fill Insert:

  • Some types of feathers naturally have an odor, but to get rid of the smell, sprinkle baking soda on the pillows.

  • Air out the insert outdoors once in a while.

  • The baking soda helps remove odors, while the fresh air removes moisture that lead to odors.
